K2 Expedition Overview
K2 stands in the heart of the Karakoram Mountains in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. At 8,611 meters, it is the second-highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest. Unlike many other peaks, K2 is respected for its technical difficulty, unpredictable weather, and steep climbing terrain. Climbers from across the world come to Pakistan every summer to attempt this legendary mountain.
The K2 Expedition begins in Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan. After arriving at Islamabad International Airport, our team welcomes all participants and transfers them to the hotel. A detailed expedition briefing is arranged to discuss climbing plans, safety procedures, equipment checks, and the overall itinerary.
The next stage of the journey takes you to Skardu, the main gateway to the Karakoram Mountains. The flight from Islamabad to Skardu is considered one of the most scenic mountain flights in the world. During the flight, weather permitting, travelers can enjoy breathtaking views of Nanga Parbat and several snow-covered Himalayan and Karakoram peaks.
Skardu is a beautiful mountain town surrounded by rocky peaks, rivers, and green valleys. It is also the last major town before entering the remote mountain region leading to K2 Base Camp. Most climbers spend a couple of days here for rest, final shopping, and expedition preparations.
From Skardu, the expedition continues with a jeep drive to Askoli, the last permanent village on the route to K2. Beyond Askoli, there are no roads, hotels, or towns. The real mountain adventure begins here.
The trekking section follows the world-famous Baltoro Glacier route. During the trek, climbers pass through Johla, Paiju, Khoburtse, Urdukas, Goro, and Concordia. Every campsite offers incredible views of giant peaks, glaciers, and dramatic mountain landscapes.
Concordia is one of the most beautiful mountain camps in the world. Located at the meeting point of the Baltoro Glacier and Godwin-Austen Glacier, Concordia is surrounded by many famous mountains, including Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, Mitre Peak, and K2 itself. Many trekkers and climbers describe Concordia as the “Throne Room of the Mountain Gods” because of its unmatched scenery.
From Concordia, climbers continue to Broad Peak Base Camp and then to K2 Base Camp. The climbing phase of the expedition begins from here. During this period, climbers rotate between camps for acclimatization, training, and summit preparation.
Our experienced mountain guides, high-altitude porters, cooks, and support staff remain at the base camp throughout the expedition. We provide nutritious meals, communication support, medical assistance, and logistical management to help climbers focus on their summit goals.
Good food and proper rest are very important during high-altitude climbing. Our expedition kitchen team prepares fresh and healthy meals every day to maintain energy levels and support recovery during the climbing period.
After the summit attempt and climbing period, the team returns to Askoli following the same trekking route. From Askoli, participants drive back to Skardu and later fly to Islamabad. The expedition officially ends in Islamabad before departure flights home.

Trek to K2 Base Camp
The trek to K2 Base Camp is one of the greatest trekking adventures in the world. The trail passes through glaciers, rocky paths, mountain camps, and remote valleys surrounded by towering peaks.
The Baltoro Glacier is the main route used by climbers and trekkers. It is one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions and offers stunning views throughout the journey. Trekkers walk beside famous granite towers, ice formations, and massive snow-covered mountains.
Along the route, climbers can see many legendary peaks, including:
- Broad Peak (8,047m)
- Gasherbrum I (8,080m)
- Gasherbrum II (8,035m)
- Chogolisa (7,668m)
- Masherbrum (7,821m)
- Trango Towers
- Mitre Peak
The trekking phase also helps climbers gradually adjust to high altitude before beginning the technical climbing section of the expedition.
K2 Climbing Route
The Abruzzi Spur is the standard route used for most K2 summit attempts. It is the most popular route on the mountain and was first climbed successfully by the Italian expedition in 1954.
The route includes steep snow slopes, rock climbing sections, exposed ridges, and dangerous ice features. Some of the most famous sections on the route include House’s Chimney, the Black Pyramid, the Shoulder, and the Bottleneck.
The Bottleneck is considered one of the most dangerous parts of the climb because it passes below large hanging seracs. Climbers need proper weather conditions, strong teamwork, and careful timing during the summit push.
Although K2 is one of the most difficult mountains in the world, reaching the summit is an unforgettable achievement for experienced mountaineers.
Best Time for K2 Expedition in Pakistan
The best season for the K2 Expedition is from June to August. During these summer months, temperatures are relatively stable, glaciers are more accessible, and weather conditions are more suitable for climbing.
July is usually considered the best summit window because of improved weather patterns and longer stable periods. However, weather in the Karakoram can change quickly, so flexibility and patience are always important during the expedition.
History of K2 Expedition
K2 was first climbed successfully on 31 July 1954 by an Italian expedition led by Ardito Desio. The summit team included Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni, who became the first climbers to stand on the top of K2.
The mountain had already attracted several earlier expeditions because of its massive height and difficult climbing conditions. Over the years, K2 earned a reputation as one of the toughest and most respected mountains in the world.
The Abruzzi Spur route, first explored by Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi, later became the standard route used by most climbers.
Today, climbers from different countries travel to Pakistan every year to attempt the famous K2 summit.
